The unique artistic tradition has its origin in the ancient kingdom of Mithla. Tradition states that this style of painting originated at the time of the Ramayana, when king Janak commissioned artists to do paintings at the time of marriage of his daughter Sita to Lord Rama. Since then, the women of Mithla used to decorate their houses with paintings on walls & floors on festive occasions with natural colours and during marriage ceremonies. At present this art form is identified with Madhubani district of state of Bihar, India and hence is known as Madhubani painting. Since the early seventies this art form has encompassed the medium of eco- friendly handmade paper
